Radical Space|A Situational Space
‘Radical Space’ is a space carrying out projects and demonstrating practice in Shanghai founded by Shi Qing, Huang Songhao and a series of artists. The space is around 45 square meters, only group exhibitions are performed here. Under most circumstances, works overlap with each other and there is basically no luxurious boundary in between. The space is mainly for demonstration purpose, yet we would expect that it could be mixed with all sorts of stuff. ‘Radical’ here is not about those works from the space or the quality exhibitions present, its origin is based on the acknowledgment of nature of conflict in reality. ‘Radical’ normally would not be our first scene, it is more often that it is diluted, sedimented and pass on to everyday life, we must use this method to extract and activate this ‘Radicalness’. Under this condition, ‘Radical Space’ could be regarded as ‘Situational Space’. Throughout the modern history of progress, our ways of advancing are usually achieved by voluntary self-disruptions. Apart from revolutions or other radical approaches, this tradition of ‘Radicalness’ still exists in our cultural logic. ‘Radical Space’ is trying to inherit this ideology to accept more relations of production, at the same time, organise and develop art practice correspondingly.
